Summary Report of the 2020 Annual General Meeting

The 2020 Annual General Meeting was held as a virtual meeting on October 15, 2020. Turnout was high, with more than 60% of the class members in attendance. The following are highlights of the meeting:

  • Reports from the various regions indicated than despite the COVID 19 pandemic, there was 2.4mR sailing activity in the regions of Canada where the boat is popular. Some members reported boats being stuck in the United States due to the closing of the border between the two countries.
  • Class Membership increased to 32 members in 2020. The class membership year is April 1 to March 31 of the following year.
  • Financially the class had a small surplus in 2020 of $ 179.50
  • Annual Dues were set for 2020. Dues will be $ 40.00 for Full Members and $ 20.00 for Associate members.
  • There was a frank discussion of the activities of the Executive Committee of the International 2.4mR Class Association.
  • The 2021 Canadian 2.4mR Championship Regatta was awarded to the Royal Victoria Yacht Club and will be held September 10 – 12, 2021
  • The schedule for the 2021 CAN AM Winter Series was announced. The first week of races will be January 25 – 30 with the second series to be held Feb 20 – 21. The final series will be held March 29 – April 3rd. All events will be hosted by Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club.
  • It was agreed to host a scheduling Zoom meeting in January 2021 to co-ordinate the race schedules of the various fleets.
  • The election of class officers for 2021 was by acclamation. Peter Wood of Ottawa was reappointed President, Brian Robinson of Victoria was appointed as Secretary, Bruce Millar of Victoria was reappointed as National Measurer, and Aaron Wong-Sing of Ottawa was reappointed as Webmaster. Retiring Secretary Audrey Kobayashi of Kingston was thanked for her service to the class.
  • Looking into the future, the Class has agreed to hold future Annual General Meetings as virtual videoconference meetings

Victoria Fleet Championship September 2020

The Victoria Fleet held its socially distanced Fleet Championship on September 19-20.  On Saturday, the fleet enjoyed a 5-7 kt S breeze that shifted through the day towards the SW.  Sunday offered a lighter ESE wind with fog to obscure the weather mark in the first two races.  A new experience for this 2.4 fleet!  When turning downwind from the weather mark, it was the same problem: where is the leeward mark?  Well…..just picked an appropriate wind angle, set the jib and soon the start boat came into view.

Fleet members’ comments described the weekend very nicely, so here are a few of them.

  • From Mark Brown – Great Regatta, 10 challenging races, nobody “walked away” with the races, a competitive fleet, and no collisions or protests. Hard to best that outcome. We are lucky to have such competent and generous members of our fleet and club.
  • From Bob Britten – What a super way to wind up our summer of sailing!
  • To say that the conditions were challenging is an understatement – by the end of several races I felt “brain dead” – but overall I had a super time!
    Simply fantastic one-design racing!
    Thanks very muchto Bruce Millar and Louise Anstey for organizing the weekend and, of course, to Kirk Palmer, Dave Richardson, Ken Pohl and Tim Knight for giving up their weekend so that we could have fun during ours!
  • To summarize the event, Doug Bell writes: Such a pleasure to sail in our fleet. Competitive but friendly, respectful, helpful and fun.

2020 2.4mR NYC Championship

This past weekend, September 19-20, the National Yacht Club 2.4 fleet enjoyed a fantastic weekend of racing for the 2020 2.4mR Club Championship.

Although the fleet has been active with self-run racing throughout the summer, it was a treat to once again race in a real regatta with a real race committee.

Race Officer John Kitchener and his crew of volunteers did a great job of getting off 7 races in a shifty breeze.

Allan Liebel raced with exceptional consistency to win the regatta followed by Jerry Wendt in 2nd place and Darrell Suderman in 3rd.

President’s Report – April 2020

With the COVID-19 Pandemic, these are challenging times.  We are in a situation none of us have experienced before. Our final CanAm Winter Series regatta is currently postponed to April 24-26, but that seems more and more improbable with the news coming out of the United States.

On a positive note, the Victoria sailors are still getting out on the water for Wednesday afternoon sails under quite restrictive protocols. Social distancing, wiping the hoist controls, and giving room at marks and on the starting line are some of the procedures they have put in place. In the mean time, the Royal Victoria’s spring regatta scheduled for May 2 & 3 has been cancelled.  

Our 2020 CanAm North Series being sailed out of National Yacht Club in Toronto is still scheduled, starting with the first regatta June 27 & 28th and continuing with weekend regattas in July, August, and September.

The C. Thomas Clagett Regatta, normally sailed in late June in Newport, Rhode Island, has been rescheduled for Sept 1 – 6 at Sail Newport. This is an important regatta with excellent coaching and I will be attending for the ninth year. Newport is a very special place to sail and with the strong regatta organization it is an event not to be missed. You can get all the information regarding the event at www.clagettregatta.org .

I would encourage anyone thinking about going to the 2.4mR Worlds at Davis Island, Tampa Florida November 7 to 13th to register early in order to show your support. You can register now and pay the entry fee at a later date. This will help the organizers with their planning and give them positive feedback in these times of uncertainty. The website for registering is listed on the class website under events.

Dues     The Membership year for the Canadian 2.4mR Class Association is April 1 – March 31. To date, ten members have paid their 2020 membership dues. Memberships can be renewed on the class website and we will be reaching out directly to boat owners who have not paid their dues. The dues support the activities of the class both from the Canadian and International perspective.

CanAm Series 2 Wrapup – International 2.4 Meter Class US Nationals

Port Charlotte, FL – December 15, 2019

After three magnificent days of sailing with winds from all points on the compass and ranging from 2 knots to 15 knots, the US 2.4 Meter class crowned a 2019 National Champion. American Dee Smith won the 9 race series followed closely by Canadian Allan Leibel. US Class president Tony Pocklington rounded out the podium finishes.

The talented fleet was treated to wonderful hospitality by the Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club on and off the water. Several of the competitors new to the class and the CanAm series commented on how easy the venue is with a 10 minute sail out to the racing course, the great meals, flowing kegs and well stocked bar.

CanAm Series 1 Wrapup – International 2.4 Meter Class

Port Charlotte, FL – December 11, 2019
 
The first of five sailing events concluded today at the Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club. Twenty two boats from Canada and the United States sailed 4 races on day one, but were left ashore with no wind on day 2. 
 
American Paralympic sailor Dee Smith held onto a one point lead over  Canadian Olympic sailor Allen Leibel.  Smith was quoted as saying “I was lucky enough to win because my mistakes were smaller than my competitors”.  American Jeffry Linton rounded out the top three.  Full results can be found at:  https://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/applet_regatta_results.php?regatta_id=19912&
 
As mentioned above, the International 2.4 meter class winters in FL and runs 5 different events from December to March.  Can Am 2 starts Friday December 13. After the new year, CanAm 3-5 run each month through March. Report from the President November 2019

Summer 2019 Highlights:            The summer season in Eastern Canada has pretty much wrapped up while the Victoria group will still be sailing into December on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons when the weather is fair. Royal Vic YC even has the Ice Bowl Regatta on December 28th although they rarely have ice.

High water on Lake Ontario and Lac Deschenes was a challenge this summer.  The Ottawa sailing clubs were dealing with flooding of their dry sail areas and sand bags until early June while Lake Ontario sailors were finding the water lapping their dry sail areas. The docks at Kingston Yacht Club were submerged when the club hosted the North American Championship. Despite that, the Kingston Yacht Club ran a great regatta with 20 boats in attendance from as far away as Florida.

The National Yacht Club initiated CanAm North 2.4mR Series, a four-regatta series ending with the Canadian Championship September 7-8th. They are already firming up dates for a repeat of this event in 2020 and making sure the dates do not conflict with other regattas.

In Victoria, the 2.4mR fleet has grown to 18 boats. They organized a Pacific Coast Championship in June with nine boats and followed that up with Royal Victoria’s Fall Dighies Regatta with twelve boats with Louise Anstey winning both events. The Victoria fleet is working with the Seattle fleet to encourage increased participation in the Pacific Northwest.

Increasing Exposure, Participation and Boat Ownership

 There has been considerable discussion at the international level about what the class can do to increase the sailing community’s awareness of the boat and the people who sail it. We are a unique class as we welcome sailors with disabilities to compete with able-bodied sailors on an even basis. However, we are not a class or a boat that is only for sailors with disabilities.

In North America we hired a media professional to help us promote the 2018-2019 CanAm winter series. This included pre event articles and human interest stories before the series and stories and results sent to the various media outlets immediately after the completion of each of the series regattas.

At the local level we have realized that sailors are probably not going to buy a 2.4mR boat unless they have the opportunity to sail one. In Victoria, the fleet has been generous of offering their boats to other sailors who have expressed interest in the boat. In some cases it takes multiple sails before the prospective owner is convinced that it is the right fit for him/her.

In Ottawa we tried the same model with Monday evening demonstration sails for the members of Nepean Sailing Club who have been admiring our boats resting on the end of W dock. While the wind gods did not co-operate and a couple of evenings were scrubbed because of no wind, we did manage to get six members to sail the boat with more than one of them back at the bar telling other sailors about the positive experience they had. It was encouraging enough that we will try the same in 2020.

Another initiative which the Victoria Fleet has undertaken is to offer their boats to the Royal Victoria Yacht Club’s Inter fleet Championship. The top skippers from each of the yacht club’s dinghy and keelboats race short races in the 2.4mR to decide who will have bragging rights at the club. This gives the boat exposure to the best of the club’s sailors.

Upcoming events to mark on your 2020 calendar

 St. Petersburg America’s Regatta and the 2019 – 2020 CanAm Winter Series

These regattas are the best medicine for escaping winter. The America’s Regatta is December 5 – 8 at the St Petersburg Sailing Centre in St Petersburg FL followed by the Charlotte Harbor YC Midwinters December 10 – 11 and the US 2.4mR National Championships December 13 – 15, both of the latter events are in Port Charlotte FL.

The other regattas as part of the CanAm Series are the Edge Sailing Midwinters January 25 – 26, the CanAmM Regatta #4 February 22 – 23 and the CanAm Finale March 27 – 29, 2020. All events take place at the Charlotte Harbour YC.

The 2020 CanAm  North Series will be a series of four regattas (one weekend per month) starting in June 2020 and finishing with the Canadian Championships September 12 – 13 at the National Yacht Club in Toronto. Check the website for the exact dates.

The 2020 2.4mR World Championships will be held at the Davis Island Yacht Club, Tampa Florida November 7 to 13, 2020. This is the most important class event and it comes to North America once every 5 or 6 years. Previous events were held in North America in 2009 and 2014. The Davis Island Yacht Club is a sailor friendly venue and the organizing committee has already lined up a quality team of on water personnel and judges.

Clagett Boats     For the past three years, the Clagett Regatta Organizing Committee of Newport RI has annually purchased two new Norlin Mark III 2.4mR sailboats and provided them to North American sailors with a physical disability. Of the six boats currently in the program, five have been lent out to Canadian 2.4mR sailors. The most recent recipients are Peter Eagar of National Yacht Club in Toronto and Erick Poirier of AQVA in Pointe-Claire. The Canadian Class wishes to thank the Board of Directors of the Clagett Regatta for their continuing support.

2.4mR GREAT LAKES REGATTA – Aug 17/18

Sailboat Racing - CAN 8

This past weekend, the 3rd regatta of the 2.4mR CanAm North Regatta Series was hosted by National Yacht Club. Participants traveled from Florida, Maryland, Connecticut, Wisconsin, Montreal and Ottawa to compete with the local NYC 2.4 fleet.

The 15 boat fleet sailed 7 races to complete the regatta. In 3rd place was NYC’s Darrell Suderman, in 2nd place, Dee Smith of Annapolis, and in 1st place, NYC’s Allan Liebel.

North Sails

The 2.4mR Canadian Championship, hosted by NYC on Sept 7/8, will be the fourth regatta of the 2.4mR CanAm North Series. We are pleased to announce that North Sails will be sponsoring our CanAm North finale. All participants of the finale will be entered into a draw for a North TR-1 jib.

2.4mR Sailboats Racing

The regatta spirit got rolling Friday with the out of town boats arriving and being assembled. The 2.4mR fleet is always interesting for the mix of able and disable sailors. With the abled sailor helping the disabled sailors rig and launch. A few people even got out for a sail late Friday afternoon. Saturday started with light rain that ends as we arrived at NYC. Boats got launched. Clothing choices were made. We sailed out to the course in light air. Richard and his Race Committee got a course set and we were into our first race a little after 11:00. The fleet doesn’t get stretched to long so we managed to get in the full complement of four races in. We also managed to all arrive safely at the dock as a squall hit. The big increase in wind and pouring rain only lasted a few (long) minutes. Boats were put away and the cooking and eating started, along with an array of beverages to re-hydrate.

Sunday morning came around with more rain and no wind! The RC assured us there would be wind and promptly left the dock. We arrived at the race course some by tow, some in zephyrs of breeze. We all drifted around until the wind (barely) settled in at about 3.5 Knots. The wind never got above 6 knots and shifted a little back and forth. We managed to get in 3 races by 2:45. The RC then sent us in calling it a regatta, with a drop.

Back on shore priority was given to out of towners to pull their boats and get equipment packed onto trailer and trucks.

The 2019 2.4mR Great lakes Championships had 15 boats from Montreal, Ottawa, Florida, Maryland, Connecticut, and NYC. 3rd place was NYC’s Darrel Suderman, 2nd place Dee Smith of Annapolis, and 1st NYC’s Allan Liebel.

Many thanks to Richard McKean and the group of race committee volunteers. Special thanks to John King and the Sea Scouts for helping the disabled sailors rig and de rig their boats. Thanks to Able Sail Toronto for a place to park the disabled sailors boats for the weekend.

This event was the third in the CanAm North summer series. The final event is the 2.4mR Canadian Championship at NYC September 7 & 8.
